A CONVERSATION WITH VIKY RADER

How did you get into fashion and what has changed over the years? 

I started modelling when I was seventeen, after winning a beauty contest in Ukraine. Over the years I have seen so much change in the fashion world, both in terms of style and mood. Today I think the trend is to take fewer risks, to play it safe. And then came streetwear, which has had a big influence, with many interesting small brands being born.

When did you decide to start your own brand, Viky Rader Studio?

During the pandemic, in 2020. It was a time when we could all slow down and rethink our lives, thinking about what we really wanted. During that time I had enough time to develop ideas for my brand.

What does ‘doing fashion differently’ mean?

It means being more exclusive, having no limits and staying true to your own history and beliefs.

What is luxury?

For me it is an attitude. It doesn’t just mean buying expensive clothes, bags or accessories. Luxury is an attitude that is reflected in the way you live, eat, think.

How do you see the future of fashion? 

To use a well-known expression, I would say “Less is more”, or at least that is what I expect. People are rethinking what they want, what they need or what they think is necessary. I think there will be a lot of changes and I am very excited about that. Viky Rader Studio is part of this future. 

How would you describe your relationship with jewellery?

It started a long time ago. I have always been a fan of layering: I like to wear a lot of jewellery but light, like ornaments on the body. I wear them every day, maybe small pieces like rings, bracelets, watches and earrings. If I don’t wear them, I feel like I’m not dressed up enough. Jewellery has an expressive function, like clothes.

What do you look for in a piece of jewellery?

I usually look for more understated pieces. If I choose something flashy it’s for the evening, when I dare with bolder, stronger pieces like a nice necklace, big earrings or a ring that stands out. You have to be careful though, because like clothes, jewellery can add a touch of class or become excessive.

What’s in your jewellery box?

Lots of rings in different shapes and styles. A selection of earrings and my favourite necklace, a chain that I wear both during the day and in the evening. I also always wear a bracelet on my right arm.

How do you manage to reconcile your work as a fashion designer and entrepreneur with your private life?

It is very challenging. I am still trying to find the right way to balance them. I think having a good team and a good structure is crucial: it is important that everyone knows their roles and responsibilities. I am very active. I try to keep up with phone calls and emails, but the people around me give me enormous support. I really believe that having the right team is essential, because one person alone cannot do everything.

Where are you now, and what’s on the horizon?

I am currently about to complete my fourth pregnancy, I can’t wait to become a mum again! There are many things on the horizon: I would like to bring even more value to my brand, continue to create good content, explore the world. I also have a foundation, with which I would like to take my message of kindness everywhere in the world.

What is the best piece of advice you have received about motherhood? 

About ten years ago, when my first child was born, I received very good advice from another mum, older than me and much calmer. I was struggling: my son was not sleeping well and I was very stressed. The nights were short and the days endless. I wanted to do things perfectly, but I didn’t know how, and I was very worried. She told me not to listen to anyone, to forget the books and to listen to my heart: the most important thing was that I was happy, and then the baby would be happy too. There is no such thing as a perfect mother!
